NESTA Functional Training Specialist
Overview of Program Content (4 sections)
I - Functional Training Introduction – Foundations
Functional training is the utilization of exercises which involve complex, multi-joint movements of the upper body, core and lower body in each exercise. Just because the body CAN move in a given direction does not necessarily mean that it should be reinforced through repetitive movement patterns, with explosive tempo and/or heavy loads. We need more information before making such choices. Many training programs sacrifice functionality and skip efforts to improve function to meet aesthetic goals. Whether the goal is aesthetics or performance, functionality will improve both. It is absolutely true that the main goal of most gym participants or fitness seekers is how they look more than “function”. Yet, function is undeniable in its ability to improve not only sport and daily work performance but physical appearance as well.
Learn exercises that are appropriately designed for all types of athletes and sports enthusiasts.
II -Functional Assessments
Assessments typically either receive high accolades, or are soundly denounced as unworthy of our professional time. The difficulty can be that the information gathered is often difficult to interpret. There is more than one way to resolve an individual’s dysfunctions. The assessments, observations and exercises provided in this program should provide considerable progress to improving function by providing several options and professional choices. If you decide to take the information from this program and formulate a meaningful exercise program with some of your own ideas based on your research and expertise, that’s great. Use information to your advantage. Learning never stops, and there is always room to improve function.
Specific dysfunctions including ankle sprains, shin splints, knee ligament injury, hip pointers and dysfunctions, spinal misalignment, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder pain, elbow tendonitis, and wrist sprains and carpal tunnel issues will be discussed in detail with possible solutions for improving function and reducing pain and impairment.
III - Functional Exercise Programming
Above all else, functional exercise programming is up to individual professional interpretation dependent upon the needs and capabilities of the client. Actual exercises utilized in the training program will vary in repetitions, sets, recovery, time under tension, tempo and selection based upon the level of training and client capabilities. Although this program is designed to meet basic needs, many individuals who feel they are intermediate to advanced level exercisers will be challenged in the attempt to perform these exercises with efficient form and technique.
Over 70 warm-up and functional exercises and progressions are discussed for purposes of improving function for sport, reducing injuries, and improving general fitness.
IV - Functional Business Success – How to use this information and be successful
We aren’t going to give you all the secrets here just yet. Success comes in many forms. The difference between trainers who are successful and those who are not is the difference between those who seize opportunities when they present themselves and those who do not. Personality and good looks may win clients over initially, but it is your skill to help them over time that will keep them coming back.
