7 Ways for Fitness Trainers to Increase Facebook Page Engagement

If you’re like many fitness and personal training entrepreneurs, a good portion of your day is spent wondering why your Facebook page engagement is so low.

After carefully choosing great content to share, you proudly post it on your Facebook page….only to watch hours go by as you rack up 1, 2, maybe 3 likes (if you’re lucky).

And someone actually leaving a comment on your post? A miracle!

OK, so maybe your Facebook page picture isn’t as grim as all that.

Is Your Facebook Page a Waste of Time? Why Facebook pages aren’t what they used to be (and what to do it about it)

But for many of us who run our fitness businesses online, it’s getting harder and harder to get a response on Facebook.

Users are so bombarded with posts, requests, and other content that it’s likely your message is getting lost in the shuffle.

Here are 7 tried and true tips for increasing Facebook page engagement and getting fans interested in your brand again.

  1. Observe the 80/20 rule

If you’re using your Facebook page to constantly post links to your website, your fans will soon tire of the pushiness.

Be sure to mix it up with links from other relevant websites, fun graphics/photos, personal updates, and questions.

A good rule of thumb is to share other people’s content 80% of the time, and your own content 20% of the time. This keeps fans interested and prevents them from feeling “sold to” every time you post.

It’s also the best way to prevent those dreaded “unlikes.”

  1. Post at the right time

Timing of your content is crucial for increasing engagement.

If you share a new blog post on your Facebook page on Friday at 6pm, no one will see it!

Remember that people’s newsfeeds are packed and that not everyone will scroll down to see the hundreds of updates they’ve missed.

It’s also important to keep in mind that you’re likely to get the most interaction right when you post, so choosing the best time is crucial.

Generally speaking, the most people will see a post on your Facebook page between 6-8am or 2-5pm between Monday and Friday.

But always test what works best for your audience. If you post on Saturday morning and get a great response, roll with it!

  1. Never buy Facebook likes

Ok, so buying Facebook likes on Fiverr may temporarily buy you a little more street cred, but Facebook is cracking down on fake accounts and this may no longer be an option anyway.

Besides, what’s the point of having a bunch of fake fan who fake like you? It simply serves to trash your engagement.

If a prospective client sees 5,000 likes on your Facebook page but hardly any likes or comments, they’ll know you’re pulling a fast one!

Instead, court real, authentic fans who are truly interested in you and your brand. When it comes to engagement, it’s far better to have 50 active, involved followers than 500 people who never respond.

  1. Ask authentic questions

We’ve all seen questions posted on business Facebook pages. Sometimes they’re great, and sometimes they ring false.

To me, it’s pretty obvious when a marketing person posts a question for the sole purpose of increasing engagement (not because they truly wanted an answer to a question).

Ask questions of your fans when you truly want to know the answer. The authenticity will shine through and you’ll start a real conversation that could lead to real clients!

For instance, if you’re having trouble choosing which movie to see, looking for a new hairdresser, or debating where to hold your next conference, ask your fans! People love to share their two cents, especially on social media.

  1. Create timed offers, freebies, and discounts

The most successful Facebook pages out there have thousands, even millions of fans because they consistently provide value to those fans.

Depending on your business, you might provide value in the form of a coupon, contest, discounted service or fun freebie.

Teach your fans that your Facebook page is the only place to score these goods, and watch as engagement and likes soar.

  1. Get personal

Your Facebook page is a business page, but Facebook is a social network. That means people want to connect with a person, not a faceless entity.

However, there is a fine line between personal and private. Your fans certainly don’t need status updates on your romantic relationships or toilet routine.

Great personal posts to your Facebook page might involve..

  • Travel (share a few vacation photos!)
  • Checking in at a great restaurant (“Has anyone else been here?”)
  • Doing a fun activity with your kids

Remember that these posts don’t necessarily have to be directly related to your business; their purpose is to connect with fans on a human level.

  1. Start your own Facebook group

Facebook pages are going more and more in the direction of websites. It’s still important to have one, but chances are you’ll see far more engagement by participating in or starting your own Facebook group.

A Facebook group is a more personalized experience for group members that share a common interest. There is a feeling of belonging to a particular club, and an exclusivity that comes from knowing posts are seen by group members only.

People join groups because of a passion or a problem. Because of that, groups are a much better place to engage with prospective clients and show them what you have to offer.

To increase engagement on your Facebook page, remember to….

  1. Observe the 80/20 rule
  2. Post at the right time
  3. Never buy Facebook likes
  4. Ask authentic questions
  5. Create timed offers, freebies and discounts
  6. Get personal

And to increase engagement on Facebook even more…

  1. Start your own Facebook group (or join an existing group or groups)

Above all, stay consistent with your Facebook strategy and focus on quality over quantity.
