Simplifying Your Approach to Running Your Training or Coaching Business
It’s no secret that running a business is one of the most complex and stressful endeavors a person can take on. In the beginning, you’re vacillating between having too much time on your hands and stressing about when business will pick up. With a little hard work, before you know it you’ll have more business than you can handle. This is a good thing and a bad thing if you don’t have systems in place to properly manage your time, your clients, and your energy.
There is no quicker way to a business’s failure than burnout or lack of proper time management by the person who runs it. So, how do you know when you’re headed for success or headed for disaster? If you’re not careful the two can look eerily alike. We want you to succeed, whether you’re working alone or with a team. It starts with being honest with you.
Focus
There is an old adage, “what you focus on you create more of”. The meaning behind this saying is about mindset. If you’re in the beginning stages of your business and things are slow, you might find yourself feeling desperate for clients and income. This promotes a fear-based mentality behind your language, thoughts, and actions. If you notice this feeling creeping up, catch yourself early, and shift your mindset to one of abundance. Practice affirmations. Tell yourself every morning, “money flows to me in abundance” and watch it manifest before your eyes. Come from a place of abundance and not a place of scarcity.
Approach
Another saying comes to mind with this one, “the way you do one thing is the way you do everything”. It took me a while to realize the depth behind this. When I first heard it I thought there’s no way that’s true, that I can give some things my full attention and effort and not with others. Then I realized, that’s still not a good approach. That’s what this distills down to, approach. Be honest with yourself, are you spreading your time and attention too thin? How are you approaching each thing on your list?

Less is More
The fictional character Ron Swanson of NBC’s Parks and Recs once said, “never half-ass two things, whole-ass one thing”. If you find yourself dividing your time and attention between too many things you’ll burnout. Not only that but the work will suffer. When the work suffers your overall business and income suffer. Be honest with yourself, cut back on the things that don’t serve you, or outsource smaller projects so you can focus on the tasks that matter most.
Time Management
This skill will be acquired with time, trial, and error. It’s tough to know starting out how to best divide and schedule your day. Once you start getting a steady stream of clients, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed. Download some time management apps that lock you out of texting and social media apps during certain hours so you’re not tempted to distract yourself. Schedule things out on a calendar and stick to it.
Hire Help
You might not be in a place financially to hire someone full-time, but there are many helpful alternatives. Look to freelance sites to hire a part-time virtual assistant, a social media assistant, someone to create and run Facebook ads or email campaigns, write blogs, and more. There are many affordable people online available for one-off purchases. Utilize them to help keep you focused on what matters.
Rest
It may sound counterintuitive, though rest is a crucial component of success. That goes for business leaders, athletes, entrepreneurs, and everyone in between. Schedule a time for your work to end so you can turn off and reset. Utilize the 80/20 rule to focus on your business while still prioritizing fun and relaxation. Get enough sleep. Drink enough water. Enjoy your weekends with family and friends as much as possible. It’s a daunting task to run a business, especially when you’re flying solo. With some practice and intent of the above steps, you’ll be well on your way to a more balanced life.
