How to Quickly Improve Your Fitness Income Potential and Knowledge with Biomechanics

biomechanics classes for personal trainers and health coaches

There are trainers, and then there are trainers who other trainers admire and respect because of their in-depth knowledge of fitness and the human body.  Before we discuss career options and how to make more money each week with advanced biomechanics knowledge, let’s discuss a few critical aspects of the science first.

What is Biomechanics?

The goal of biomechanics is to evaluate the motion and the actions of forces on that organism.  Biomechanics is the common and significant missing link in all fitness and performance training.  Training needs to be more than sets and reps. To become a better trainer, you will want to have a deep understanding of the “how” and the “why” behind each exercise.

Biomechanics informs both program design and exercise techniques for educated trainers (making each workout more efficient and safer).

Trainers and coaches with proper biomechanical knowledge understand how anthropometric characteristics may predispose certain individuals to success in certain activities (e.g., sports).  In contrast, for others, the same activities would lead to frustration and injury.

Coaches and trainers use biomechanics to optimize an athlete’s technique (e.g., running, throwing, catching, swinging, etc.).

Those working with seniors need to understand proper biomechanics to make the appropriate adjustments to the workout to keep it safe but still improve their quality of life by addressing their activities of daily living.

Those knowledgeable in biomechanics can consult with equipment manufacturers on designing new equipment.

How Can You Increase Your Income with Biomechanics Training?

Here are some specific business models you can implement as a NESTA Certified Biomechanics Specialist:

SPORTS TEAM PERFORMANCE CONSULTANT

Aside from having your credentials in personal training, sports nutrition, speed, agility, and quickness; having a biomechanics certification gives you the high-level and specific skills needed by a wide variety of sports teams to ensure peak performance for their team members.  You can offer coaching/consulting services on a contractual or hourly basis or open a training facility at your home.  See this guide on building a fitness business and gym at your home.  Of course, you can also open a sports conditioning facility.  Depending on how you package your monthly services for a team and the team itself, you can command from $1000 – $3000 per month.  If you offer your services per hour, expect $50 – $100 per hour.

CONSULT PRIVATE CLIENTS ON HOME GYM DESIGN

After you complete your specialized training, you will have the higher-level skills needed to understand home gym design from a functional and biomechanical perspective.  You will better understand the optimal movements that can be accomplished with a wider range of equipment.  Who do you consult?  You can collaborate with equipment manufacturers.  You can contract with retail outlets that specialize in home gym equipment and layout.  You can market yourself directly to the end user (the consumer).  You can charge per project with a fee ranging from $300 – $1500 depending on the amount of work, design, and consulting involved.

WORK WITH A SPORTS CHIROPRACTOR

With few exceptions, chiropractors have always been great allies of fitness professionals.  We both seek natural solutions to make the human body stronger, more flexible, more resilient, and higher functioning.  In a thriving chiropractic office, the doctor could see 30 – 70 patients in a day.  That is a lot.  And, because health insurance is a balancing act, chiropractors are always seeking ways to get reimbursed for their work in their offices.  They bill insurance for the adjustment, massage, ice therapy, hot therapy, ultrasound, muscle stimulation, x-rays, cold laser, and more.  However, when you work with the doctor doing movement therapy, facilitated stretching, or strength training, the doctor can legally and ethically bill insurance under a wide range of billing codes.  They make more money because of YOU.  This job provides a comfortable environment, a steady paycheck, and a place to learn additional skills.  Based on your other certifications (personal training, nutrition, yoga, sleep science, etc.), you can command from $25 – $50/hour.

Ultimately, when you become knowledgeable in biomechanics, you are a problem-solver.  You take your clients/athletes, wherever they are currently, to the next level of function and strength.
