“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” —Mark Twain
Are you a successful fitness trainer?
Or rather, do you see yourself as a successful fitness trainer?
Those might appear to be two different questions, but I’ve learned that they’re one and the same. Throughout my career, I’ve seen fitness trainers of all kinds, backgrounds, market niches, genders, ethnicities, and religious persuasions -and I’ve discovered that none of those things will determine if a trainer will become successful or not. What will make or break the career of fitness trainers is this: who they believe themselves to be.

That’s why I’ve often said that if you want to know who you really are, then start a business, but if you want to be successful in that business, then you’ve got to know who you really are.
Here are three reasons why this is the case…
#1 – Your Willpower Is Fueled by Your Beliefs
In everyone’s psyche, there are two sides: the conscious and the subconscious. Our conscious minds are essentially the ‘gatekeepers’ to our subconscious minds, ultimately defining what our subconscious minds will accept as our reality. Now, it is possible to hear a thing, and think it’s true -but it’s not until we feel that something is true, will we integrate that thought into our operating belief system. When we feel that something is true on subconscious level, then the thought makes a huge impact on our identity as a whole. That’s why guys like Tony Robbins have said,
“People have enormous capabilities beyond what’s thought to be possible. The power to tap into our tremendous potential comes from our identity: how we define ourselves, and what believe we can achieve.”
The subconscious is incredibly powerful, and it’s where our inner potential, or willpower, resides. So, if we’ve identified ourselves as quitters, incapable, or not intelligent enough to be successful, then those limiting beliefs about ourselves will undercut our inner potential and stunt our outer results. Your willpower will flow where your identity says it should. And your identity is defined by who you believe yourself to be.
Thus, if you believe yourself to be unsuccessful, then no matter how hard you work and how many hours you spend at the gym, you’re still going to remain …unsuccessful.
However, if you deeply feel to your core that you are already successful, and that only time separates you from the manifestation of that success -then your potential is already in the process of being unleashed.
It’s just who you are.
#2 – Your Beliefs Will Determine Your Attitudes and Behaviors
Another reason why beliefs are so important is that they are going to determine the general nature of your attitudes and behaviors. According to Jeff Boss, contributor to Entrepreneur, limiting or empowering beliefs are exactly what will influence our perception of our potential and confidence in our capabilities:
It has been said that, “Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” In other words, what we tell our brains is in direct consequence to the beliefs we create and the resultant behavior.
To flesh out this idea, here’s an example of what I’m talking about. Let’s say that you’re in the process of trying to sell your fitness training services to a prospective client: if you already don’t have faith in the effectiveness of your own fitness program, you think you’re horrible pitching, or you simply don’t feel confident for some unknown reason -then that person is going to sense this from a mile off.
It’s just going to show up in your body language and in your perceived enthusiasm; and this lack of confidence will noticeably siphon away your potential charisma. This makes sense, because honestly, is anybody going to excel at something that they’ve already failed at? Nope.
But on the flip side of that coin, if you absolutely believe that you’re a top-notch trainer with an undeniably magnetic sales pitch -then you’re sheer confidence alone could win a client-base. You’ve already won the client before you even left the house this morning …and that inevitable win is merely playing itself out.
Your beliefs are also going to influence your daily choices on the little things as well, and friends, it’s the little things that create success (not the big things).
#3 – Your Daily Choices Will Cultivate Your Future
When I say, ‘the little things’, I’m talking about all those moments when you decided to get into the office 10 minutes earlier than usual, post just one more tweet for the day, or spend just 10 more minutes getting to know a client after the session (when you could’ve headed for home instead). Why are these little daily choices so important, ultimately cultivating into future success?
According to Robbins, success isn’t built on the single big choices and opportunities: those gargantuan business agreements, or landing an entire class-worth of clients in one pitch. Success, instead, is built on the foundation of a thousand tiny, miniscule choices and opportunities that happen on a daily basis. And just as he’d described in the analogy on the video, the most insignificant changes of degree in the trajectory of a golf ball from right off the tee will have massive influence on its final destination.
Your identity, your beliefs about yourself, are going to make a the difference on whether your success will land in the green, the fairway, or in the sand pit. If the trajectory of your angle is right on the money, your identity and beliefs are in sync with that of a successful trainer, then the world is your oyster…
And it’s not a result of how hard you hit the ball.
Every Day, a Fresh Start
Here’s the cool part about all this: the only reason to look back on yesterday is to figure out what you can learn from it. Other than that, there’s no point in dwelling on the past, because what matters most is right now. How you define yourself today is what will influence your success tomorrow -and all it takes is the smallest change in the mental trajectory of your beliefs.
So, if you willing to set aside your doubts and fears, and if you’re willing to choose to believe that you’re a successful person -so strongly that you can feel it in your gut…
…then my friend, you’re already there, and that golf ball is already headed for greener pastures. It’s just a matter of time, because that’s just who you are.
