7 Signs You Need to Amp Up Your Fitness Programming or LOSE Your Clients

Secrets to Keeping More Fitness Clients

Maybe you’ve noticed some trends in your training program. The people who you’re used to seeing maximum effort and results from aren’t performing the way they used to. Your steady clients are cancelling or “forgetting” appointments. Your rate of client churn is way above what you’ve come to consider normal.

There could be a number of reasons for this. But regardless of that the reasons are, the first thing you need to do is identify what behaviors are at work here and how and why they impact your training regimens with individual clients.

With that in mind, we’ll discuss the seven possible problems in your training program so you can deal with it accordingly and amp up your fitness training!

1. Higher rate of client churn

If you suddenly start losing a disproportionate amount of clients, ask yourself why. Do they all move in the same circles? Was the “get in shape” plan just a phase akin to a New Year’s Resolution? Did they simply decide to go another route to get to the same place?

2. Higher incidents of cancellations and no-shows

Okay, everyone knows that sometimes life happens: kids have a thing, boss is on someone’s back about a report that absolutely has to be done day before yesterday, etc. We understand and make allowances for this, but when it becomes habitual, it’s time to figure out why.

3. Less energy than you’re used to seeing

Are you modifying the training to keep your clients motivated and actively interested, or going with the “tried and true?” Maybe it’s time for a change. People who are challenged both mentally and physically will perform better and with higher intensity than those who have settled into a comfortable routine.

4. Boredom

If your clients are getting bored, they’ll let you know. Changing your strategies to keep them interested is a powerful way to keep your training mojo and keep motivating them to strive for the maximum possible results.

5. Getting more motivation

Your clients are people too, and they have bills, families, personal worries and problems just like you do. If you get a client who’s suddenly falling off, taking a session to listen to them and talk about how you can help might be a better motivation booster than any amount of yelling or encouragement could be.

6. Try a new environment

Another issue to consider is environment. Are your clients just bored with the same old routine and surroundings? Maybe you should consider switching it up, doing some road work or moving the training area outdoors for a couple of sessions, or trying some indoor training if you work primarily outdoors.

7. How is your personality affecting the situation?

Maybe you need to adapt your training program to dial down the intensity a little. It could be that your personality is just too perky or aggressive to mesh well with that of your clients, or you may just have a genuinely apathetic person on your hands. Trying to motivate is all very well and good, but you can’t motivate someone who’s really not interested in getting healthier.

Everyone’s unique, and what works for one person may be the worst possible thing for the person right behind them in line. Try tailoring your fitness program and goals to the individual person, keeping in mind things like personality and overall fitness objectives.

Don’t be afraid to try new things if the old ways you’re using aren’t getting the job done. Above all else, communicate with your clients and find out how you can best help them. The more you listen, the more effort you’ll get from your clients and the better results you can give them!
