Benefits of The Sports Nutrition Specialist Course
Serious athletes train hard and are continually looking for ways to take their “game” to the next level. To assist them in reaching their goals, trainers and coaches will program workouts, taking into consideration the athlete’s current condition, as well as the unique demands of the sport. Depending on the athlete and their sport, a properly designed training program can be customized to increase strength, speed, agility, quickness, power, endurance, or a combination of these goals.
However, as you likely already know…training is only half of the equation.
To perform optimally, athletes need to have the suitable nutrient intake to fuel their performance and allow for appropriate recovery.
Unfortunately, athletes are often uninformed or misguided when it comes to the food they eat. They need to be educated not only on what and how much to eat, but also on when they should be eating.
And that is where you come in…
When you enroll in the Sports Nutrition Specialist course, you will have the knowledge to assess an athlete’s specific nutritional needs and customize a plan and recommendations for optimal performance and recovery. To achieve this objective, the SNS course reviews the latest research in the field, and reviews the sciences which create the foundation for such research, including some basic principles in chemistry, biology, and exercise physiology. Yeah, you get all of that!
What Will you Learn ad a Sports Nutrition Specialist?
A Sports Nutrition Specialist (SNS) must understand the strategies for proper energy, nutrient, and fluid intake for each athlete in each performance, competition or event. This is accomplished by both balancing and managing the unique issues for the following athlete factors:
♦ overall health
♦ nutrient needs
♦ performance goals
♦ physical characteristics
♦ practical challenges to proper intake
♦ food preferences
♦ current training level
The SNS course will provide you with the foundational knowledge of nutrition and its use as a tool to enhance the performance and recovery of your athletes and clients.
The information you provide to your client is based on healthy eating for individuals without underlying health issues. Only a government-licensed dietitian or nutritionist who has completed a degree program in dietetics has the qualifications to provide nutritional programming for any individuals with a known metabolic, cardiovascular, or pulmonary disease (or who has any concerns where altering the eating program may potentially increase health risk).
Completing this course does not provide the education to make you a registered dietitian, licensed dietitian, certified sports dietitian, or licensed nutritionist. Each state has specific rules regarding nutrition licensure and should you be interested; this specific information is easily obtainable from your State of practice. Additionally, there are websites where you can find Sports Dietitians and Registered Dietitians within a geographic area. (to find a Sports Dietitian or Registered Dietitian in your area visit www.eatright.org)
This course does not provide the tools to diagnose or treat anyone with a known disease or underlying medical condition.
After completion of this program with thorough knowledge of its applications, you will be able to provide dietary recommendations (not full meal planning which is the domain of the licensed dietitian or licensed nutritionist) and alterations to eating plans in preparation for and recovery from competitive sport-level training.
As a trainer or coach with a fundamental knowledge of nutrition, it is within your scope of practice to address client concerns regarding their diet and training patterns. In order to provide the client with the tools they will need to reach their health or fitness goals, it is imperative that trainers and coaches have a knowledge base regarding nutrition. With this added knowledge, your skills as a trainer or coach will be enhanced. You will have a broader knowledge base to work from (more tools in your toolbox).
By the end of this program, you will be able to customize nutritional recommendations for an athlete by assessing their specific needs to optimize performance and recovery. This means you will need to understand how to assess the physiological demands placed on your athletes during training and competition and how to use this information to suggest personalized nutrition strategies. Your role will be one of teacher and coach. You will teach your athlete the principles of proper nutrition to meet their specific needs and coach them in the proper lifestyle changes to make it a reality.
To achieve this objective, we will need to review foundational nutrition science and those sciences on which it is built (chemistry, biology, and human physiology). You will also dive into the latest research on how to apply these concepts and create recommendations for your athletes. The course will also cover how to best coach and communicate this information to your athlete, so they can implement your recommendations successfully.
