How Personal Trainers Can Build a Business with Dogs

As a NESTA Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, you are likely seeking fun, new, and creative ways to attract new clients and keep your business exciting and relevant.  If you are like most people, you love dogs. Have you ever considered creating a community-based, one-on-one or group fitness program with dogs and their owners?  You may be surprised by the various options for workouts (both indoors and outdoors) for dogs and their owners.

Of course, you will want to check with any local regulations. And you will want to explore different insurance requirements. With this type of creative program, it would be incredibly easy to garner the attention of local, and even national, media. And, as you may know, any social media post with a dog gets at least twice the interaction as a post without the dog. This is one of the easiest ways for you to spread your message more quickly. Don’t believe us? Do a similar post to what you’ve done before, but next time have your dog in the picture/video with you. Watch what happens. Now imagine that on a large scale with a proven business model.

Creative and Engaging Ways to Exercise with Your Dog

We all know that regular exercise is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But why not make it even more enjoyable by including your furry friend in the mix? Dogs are natural enthusiasts when it comes to physical activity, and incorporating them into your exercise routine can be a fantastic bonding experience. In this article, we will explore creative and fun ways to exercise with your dog, keeping both of you happy, healthy, and entertained.

Imagine…. Any (or all) of the options below as a fitness business model.  They can be facilitated in numerous ways.

Canine Cardio Circuit

Create a canine cardio circuit in your backyard or local park. Set up stations with different activities such as hurdles, tunnels, and weave poles. Teach your dog to navigate through the obstacles, offering treats and praise as rewards. This activity not only provides physical exercise but also stimulates their cognitive abilities.

Hiking Adventures

Explore the great outdoors with your four-legged companion by going on hiking adventures. Find dog-friendly trails in your area and embark on exciting journeys together. Hiking not only provides excellent cardio exercise but also exposes your dog to new scents, sights, and sounds. Remember to bring plenty of water and snacks for both of you.

Fetch with a Twist

Put a unique spin on the classic game of fetch by incorporating new elements. Use a ball launcher to increase the distance and challenge your dog’s speed and agility. You can also experiment with different types of balls, such as squeaky or glow-in-the-dark ones, to add excitement. Additionally, try playing fetch on a hill or in water to make it more challenging and engaging.

Dance Party

Turn your living room into a dance floor and have a dance party with your dog. Put on some energetic music and let loose. Teach your dog simple dance moves like spinning, jumping, or standing on their hind legs. Not only will this activity get your heart rate up, but it will also create a joyful atmosphere and strengthen the bond between you and your furry friend.

Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Pups

If you live near a body of water, consider trying stand-up paddleboarding with your dog. Many dogs enjoy riding on the front of the board as you navigate the water. This activity provides an excellent core workout for you while your dog gets to experience new sensations and enjoy the fresh air. Remember to introduce your dog to the paddleboard gradually, using positive reinforcement techniques to ensure they feel comfortable.

Canine Sports

Engage in canine sports such as agility, flyball, or dock diving. These activities offer structured training and exercise routines that can be both challenging and fun for your dog. Join local clubs or organizations that offer classes or competitions in these sports. Not only will your dog get physically fit, but you’ll also can meet fellow dog enthusiasts.

Doggy Boot Camp

Create a mini “boot camp” for your dog in your backyard. Set up different stations with exercises such as jumping through hoops, crawling under a makeshift tunnel, or balancing on a beam. Design a circuit routine and guide your dog through each activity. Use treats and positive reinforcement to motivate and reward them for completing each exercise.

Hide-and-Seek

Tap into your dog’s natural hunting instincts by playing hide-and-seek. Have someone hold your dog while you find a hiding spot. Once hidden, call your dog’s name and encourage them to find you. This game provides both physical and mental stimulation for your dog as they use their senses to locate you. Be sure to offer praise and treats when they successfully find you.

Doggie Parkour

Put a playful twist on traditional parkour by introducing your dog to this exciting activity. Find urban environments such as playgrounds or picnic areas with obstacles like benches, walls, and low fences. Teach your dog to navigate and interact with these objects, encouraging them to jump, climb, and balance. Always prioritize your dog’s safety and start with low-risk obstacles.

Resources for Trainers and Coaches

Exercising with your dog doesn’t have to be a mundane routine; it can be a source of joy, excitement, and enhanced companionship. And, as a fitness pro, it is a new avenue to build your business and attract new clients. By incorporating creative and fun activities into your exercise regimen, you’ll keep your dog physically and mentally stimulated while deepening your bond. Whether you’re exploring nature together, playing interactive games, or participating in canine sports, the possibilities are endless. So, get out there, have fun, and enjoy the benefits of exercising with your best friend by your side.
